 A History of Kratom

The prevalent misconception about Kratom is that it is used publicly, widely & legally for Recreational in Thailand. However, according to search – historically, Kratom has been used in specific ways for several health purposes. The truth of its legal status in Thailand is a bit more complicated, but more searches are required.

Pre-1943

Since that time in 1943, Kratom was widely used in Thailand, especially around the 1800s and early 1900s. People used Kratom for various purposes in Thailand, including during the work (labour work) when they were winding down after the workday.

1943 & On

In 1943, Kratom Act 2486 was created and passed by the Thai Government. According to this law, Kratom trees were not allowed to be planted. This meant any person who planted a Kratom tree deliberately would be against the act.

By 1979

In this era, Kratom was classified as a class 5 narcotic in 1979. While at that time, this is the lowest possible point of ranking in Thailand, but it still ended the list. As it is a Cat 5 narcotic, Kratom possession and usage could land you with a take into custody, but the police did not usually follow these charges. In early 2010,

Kratom (it is called Mitragyna speciosa Korthals) is an evergreen plant that is native to Thailand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea & Malaysia. According to research, Kratom is mainly grown in the central and southern regions of the country Thailand. Kratom plants usually like wet environment, humus soil; that is why when they grow outside their natural habitat, Kratom plants may experience leaf fall, particularly in colder climates.

The Users of Malaysia & Thailand differentiate between two main types such as red-veined variety and green-veined variety. Legality of Kratom in Thailand

According to search, the usage of both cannabis and Kratom remain illegal in the country for Recreational purpose and are punishable by prison terms and fines.

Brief Info

Currently, holding up around 10 kilograms of Kratom without authorization & permission from the Thai government will be considered ‘possession for use’, which possesses around a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of 50,000 Baht. While if the Possession will more than 10 kilograms, it will be considered ‘possession with an intention to sell’ and is punishable by two to 15 years in prison and a fine of 20,000 to 150,000 Baht. Additional charges can be imposing on those arrested more than 10 kilograms for producing, importing and/or exporting an illicit drug.

However, legal amendments to ease restrictions on Kratom are likely to be enacted by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
